In order to become a Safe Sitter, you or your family must be registered with T1DN. You must be at least 14 years of age and have first hand knowledge of diabetes care. You will also be required to attend an interview with the Community Director, and pass a knowledge assessment (test) related to the management of Type 1 diabetes. Once approved, you will receive a certificate, wallet card and Safe Sitter T-shirt. There is no fee to apply or to get certified. Once certified, you may be contacted by members in your area to care for a diabetic child. At that point, the family may still require an interview process, and a meeting to discuss your rates. Remember, you can always waive your fees in lieu of the family making a donation to T1DN. In that case, your Community Director can give you a verification letter that you can submit to your school for your community service requirement!
